Before You Read:
3. I think that technology has changed the way we speak in many ways. People are now less knowledgable about grammar due to technology. People tend to shorten words and abbreviate words too, and when it comes to writing outside of Facebook, twitter, ect. they are less open with more vocabulary.
Discussing and Journaling:
1. When Bryson discusses the writing concept, he suggests that a writing construct is hard to define, even if they are the simplest concepts. There can be many different meanings to sentences, and Bryson believes that because of that it can make it difficult for readers and process the meaning of the sentences.
3. Prescriptive and descriptive have two different meanings. Prescriptive is how somethings is prescribed in writing, and descriptive is how something is described. When I write, I believe that i use more of a prescriptive grammar rather than descriptive. When I was thought grammar, teachers didn't usually describe to us what we were learning but more prescribed, by giving us rules to follow when learning grammar.
Applying and Exploring:
1. English has been modernized to an extent. Now a days... the older generation doesn't fully or always understand what my generation is trying to say. Bryson discusses that the english language is very important, and i believe that if he saw how our generations language is today, he would be upset and discouraged.
Dawkins:
Questions for discussing and journaling:
1. Dawkins challenges the writing construct and how it is used.
3. Dawkins discusses a whole new way of how punctuation changed. After reading what he has to say about punctuation, it opened my eyes more about it. I've never looked at punctuation that closely before. He discusses that punctuation is looked at in a very strict way, and I hadn't noticed that before.
Applying and Exploring:
4. Dear Previous Teachers,
Thinking back to how I was thought writing, I find that I was not thought everything I needed to know. I am 19 years old, and still find that I am struggling when it comes to writing constructs. I believe that I was never fully thought what I needed to know and that you are to blame for that. I also believe that I was not thought grammar correctly either, I still seem to get confused with grammar when I am writing.
Sincerely,
Madeline

Dialect Notebook
Quotes:
11. “ If we were to encourage students to experiment
with visible features of written texts, we would increase their ability to
understand and use hierarchical and classificatory arrangements. “ p. 35
22. “ A second law of gestalt, that of good continuation, or good figure,
suggests that visual perception works to pull figures out of the background, to
give them definition against the undistinguished field in which they are
located.” P. 39
33. “With a visible text, it my not be fruitful to
talk about paragraphs in terms of topic sentences and support, or opening and
closing sentences, or sentences of transition” p. 41
44. “ The conclusion seems logical and is not
qualified by the authors. And yet an attempt to replicate the study under
similar conditions did not find significant gains in in comprehension which
could be attributed to visual, semantically-based groupings” p. 42
dAnalysis:
11. This quote confused me a little bit when I first
read it. I didn’t understand what Bernhardt meant by hierarchical and
classificatory arrangements. I thought it maybe meant that students would be
able to better understand harder arrangements of writing and reading. But
overall, it still confused me.
22. I completely agree with this law. Visual
perception works very well to pull a background out. I feel that is very
important when writing to give a good background.
33. This quote I feel is something we seem to
discuss a lot in class. Going out of the norm of writing and writing how you
want can sometimes benefit you. Not always following the “right” transition
ways is something that I feel can help writers.
44. I found this quote someone important. This quote
also could help me with my project considering I’m writing it on conclusion
sentences. Conclusions don’t always need to be in a writing, but the usually
help complete the writing so it has a formal ending.

Porter
Questions for discussion and journaling:
4. In the past, my writing has been evaluated based on rubrics, and usually the material that you are writing about. Unless, you are in a writing class, and your grade is based on your writing structure. But even then, it was usually based on a rubric. Based on this article writing shouldn't be graded though forums and discourse communities, before I read this article, I wasn't aware of this at all. I basically thought that all grading was usually if not always based of rubrics.
5. Originality is a major deal when it comes to writing. Everyone bases their writing off of something, which makes most of your writing not original. You may have some original parts to it, but usually it's not. You're getting ideas from others when writing. Which makes Porter correct about intertextuality. I don't believe that is text is very original because he uses other forms of text in his writing.
AE:
2. Plagiarism: Everything is your own. You may not barrow anything from anyone, everything must be original. Anything that is not sited, or includes a reference, fails you immediately. This reflects porters work, because according to him you may have legal consequences.
MM:
Porter has changed the way I look at writers. I usually imagine writers to have all of their work their own, and be original. Now that I know writers, get ideas and facts from other writers, it changes my view on writers. It may changed he way I write, giving me the idea that I can get ideas from other writers, but knowing how to get the idea's without plagiarizing.

Elbow
Getting ready to read:
- You can construct your identity using Facebook in many ways. Facebook can really make an impression of yourself. By your pictures, what you write, and how you put yourself out to people. Not only does Facebook show your identity that way, it also shows where you live, you're friends and almost everything about it. I don't really like how people can judge you based on your profile. I wish that they didn't have to see everything, and could just base your identity off your actual self and not your internet self.
- I feel it would be more you, and more opinion based. I also think it could give it more character. It would make your writing more personal.
Discussion and Journaling
1. I define voice as your own style of writing, or language. There are different types of voice, and i also believe that everyone has a different type of voice. You can be exposed to voice in different ways, whether it's language, over the internet, or even in your writing.
Applying and Exploring Ideas:
1. Sincerity is a thoughtful and careful way of writing.
Resonance is a small piece of writing that adds special connect to your writing.
Writing these in once sentence wasn't very difficult. Although I am not very familiar with those two writing styles.
Allen
Applying and Discussing:
1. I feel that sometimes I do use the method of imitation, without realizing it. The method can really help writers. I think that it is appropriate when you are having troubles with you writing and need help.
Applying and Exploring ideas:
1. Allen believes that inspired writers have a gift, writing comes easy for them. I believe this can have a bad effect on students. Many students are already very self conscious about their writing, and if they were to hear this myth, they may feel like they're writing is bad. But that brings you to anther subject; How do you know you're writing is bad? Many writers/students think their writing is bad, and it really isn't.
MM:
There has been many times when I have been discouraged when writing. Usually I feel discouraged when I'm writing about something I don't have much knowledge on. If I'm just writing to write, it can also be hard for me. But when I have a lot of knowledge on what I am writing, I feel that it is a lot easier for me to write.
Burkenkotter & Murray
Burkenkotter & Murray
QD:
1. Murray's writing process seemed very different than what we are used to. He does a lot of planning when writing. Which I feel can be good and bad. Planning when writing is something that I seem to use a lot. Although a lot of people just like to write what is on their mind, that usually doesn't work for me. When I plan what I'm going to write it usually makes my writing more organized and keeps me on track with what I'm trying to write about.
3. The study changed the way of Burkenkotters writing, and his process along with it. This made her realize how important some of the little things can be. Such as the writing process. She realizes if you put all the small things together that they discuss, it makes the writing process much easier.
Applying and Exploring:
1. My writing experience is somewhat small. Besides what I've had to do for school, I don't usually write. I do feel I have the process down, but only to an extent. I feel my writing could always be improved. I don't usually spend much time on my writing. I could always spend more time.
MM:
While reading about Berkenkotter and Murray, I learned that I should spend more time on writing. Not rushing my writing will make it easier and more efficient. Also, I learned that discovering a writing process and applying it while writing will also help me in the long run.

McCloud and Berger
McCloud:
Before you read:
I believe that when you are young, you don't just draw stick figures because you're not artistic enough (which sometimes may be the case) but because they are not fully aware of what they look like. As you grow older, you find out more about who you really are, which makes you want to draw how you observe yourself, or how you think you may look like.
Discussion:
1. I think adults still like the simplicity of cartoon because it gives them a more simplistic view of the cartoons, it opens they're mind to how they can view the writing. It also doesn't limit you're imagination as much. I don't believe that they're is an age in which watching cartoons or reading comics is inappropriate. Having the kid-feeling again as you get older makes things more fun, and gives you different styles of writing. Or just some comedy that may not be so boring as just simple television shows or paragraphs of writings.
2. McCloud uses the comic book format to convey his ideas to the reader, to try and make the readers view things in a different way. If it was only through writing, you wouldn't have the ability to have a more creative imagination while ready.
Applying and Expoling idea's:
1. I do believe that more teaching strategies should contain visual imagery. I think that it'll help students that are more visual learners learn a lot more better, and become more creative.
3. I think that adults grow out of watching cartoons because they feel that they are too mature for them. They believe that they are too childish, and hard to understand. When reading normal writings, they find them more understandable and mature.
Berger:
Before you read:
I would draw a women, face first. Nude, with a blank face, giving the audience a chance to put in a face to let them convey the picture how they want. Maybe they want to see them self, or someone else.
Discussion:
1. I believe that the artists of the paintings knew what they were creating, but wanted to make it so people could convey it in they're own way. All of our faces are masks and we all try to see something else when looking at pictures, I believe that everyone views things in their own way, and that Berger would agree with me.
2. Images are posted all over the internet of women, also on tv and in advertisements. I feel that now, the image of women are conveyed in such inappropriate and different ways. Our culture views women in ways that can be extremely misleading.
Applying and exploring:
1. Men are viewed in a very strong and powerful way. The generation gap that is shown is quite obvious and is extremely different. Although they are different, the man is still viewed in similar ways.
2. There is definently a difference in pictures of women based on how they are posed. If women are looking straight at the camera it can be viewed as more classy in a way. But if they have their chin up looking away you may have more of a powerful look within the women.

Library Research
Today in class, while searching for articles to help me with my paper, I found some very useful articles. There are three that I found the most useful. They explain what a conclusion paragraph is, and how it can help you're paper. I believe that these articles will help me a lot when writing my paper. Although I found three articles, I'm hoping to find many more. It's also a little bit difficult to find articles about just the conclusion paragraph. I used three different library sources to find these articles; QuickSearch, JSTOR, and Alice. These articles also may give me more idea's on how to write my paper, and give me more idea's on what to add to my topic. Overall, I found all these search engines very useful, and this class today even more useful.

Writing Proposal
Madeline Gilbert
Writing Proposal
Conclusion
Paragraph
Although
many people may find that the most important parts of writing a paper is to
have a strong start and thesis to a paper, the conclusion is just as important.
The conclusion paragraph in a paper helps the reader have a summarization of
what they just read. Even if you are not writing in a proper format with an
introduction, three to five paragraphs, and conclusion, and you’re just
expressing you’re mind, I still feel it’s important to have a small conclusion.
The conclusion can be just a small sentence summarizing, or a full paragraph.
It helps conclude what you were writing in your own words.
